Introduction
Design a travel poster for a book club whose next meeting is on Mars. You will use Canva Craft in Dream Lab to create a spacecraft with a glowing reading lounge, check the generated headline, add editable event details, and prepare a square version.
Sign in to Canva in a desktop browser and check that Canva Craft appears beneath the prompt. Craft is available to Canva Free users, but AI usage limits still apply. The optional Magic Layers step also uses that allowance. The event and venue below are fictional.
Step-by-step 5 steps
Instructions
1
Step 1 of 5
Open Craft in Dream Lab
From Canva's homepage, choose More → Dream Lab, or open Dream Lab directly. It lives outside the design editor. Canva's Dream Lab instructions cover this route.
Check the model beneath the prompt. Our screen showed Canva Craft-1 2K already selected. If your screen offers a model menu, select Craft. Choose a 3:4 portrait ratio for the artwork; you will place it in an exact 1080 × 1350 design later. Check any usage notice before generating. Keep the style setting unchanged while you compare attempts.
If Craft is missing, check your selected account and workspace's AI access. Stop the Craft-specific exercise if you cannot select it; a result from another model would answer a different question.
For this example, the artwork needs a readable headline and a spacecraft approaching Mars. You will add the date, time, venue, and booking line as ordinary text in the editor. That keeps those details easy to change.

Step 2 of 5
Generate the poster artwork
Paste this prompt into Dream Lab:
Prompt
Create a portrait 3:4 illustrated travel poster for a fictional book club that meets on Mars.
Show a real science-fiction spaceship carrying the club toward an enormous rust-red Mars. Give it a sleek cream-colored hull, purposeful mechanical details, antennas, and bright blue engines. Broad observation windows reveal a cozy amber-lit library lounge with bookshelves and a few tiny silhouettes reading. It is a spaceship for people who love science fiction and books. Use a conventional spacecraft silhouette, not a ship shaped like a book or any other object.
The ship sweeps diagonally through deep midnight space toward Mars. Give the planet dramatic scale. Make the image feel like a collectible 1970s space-travel poster, with cinematic illustration, strong graphic composition, tactile print grain, and a limited palette of midnight navy, vermilion, warm ivory, and electric blue.
At the top, render these exact words once in large, clear ivory lettering:
MARS BOOK CLUB
Keep every letter distinct and inside the frame. Let the headline and spaceship each have room to breathe.
Reserve the bottom fifth as quiet midnight-navy space for event details I will add later in Canva. Keep the ship, planet, and engine trail above this area.
No other text, dates, logos, labels, watermarks, or real-world brands.
Generate a set of images. Save the prompt and keep the first results in Dream Lab's History before trying again. The Dream Lab workflow can return up to four options per prompt.
Choose the version with the clearest headline and enough room below the illustration. Look for a recognizable spacecraft, a dramatic red planet, and warm windows that suggest a reading lounge. Reject extra lettering, a crowded bottom section, or a cropped headline. Tiny interior details may need inspection at full size.
The ship should make someone want to join the trip. It also needs to leave space for information a reader can actually use.
3
Step 3 of 5
Fix the headline before adding details
Read the headline letter by letter. Look for MARS BOOK CLUB, once, with all three words intact. Check it at a small viewing size as well as close up.
If the lettering is unclear, return to the original prompt. Replace its headline directions with this block, keeping the rest of the brief and selected model unchanged:
Prompt
Use plain, bold uppercase lettering for the headline. Show exactly MARS BOOK CLUB once. Keep every letter distinct and leave clear space between all three words. Add no other writing.
Generate again and compare the whole composition. A new generation can change more than the words. Keep the earlier result until the replacement passes the same checks.
Avoid spending several attempts on the same spelling problem. Use a text-free version and add the heading yourself when you need exact control:
Prompt
Create a portrait 3:4 illustrated travel poster for a fictional book club that meets on Mars.
Show a sleek, cream-colored science-fiction spaceship approaching an enormous rust-red Mars. Its broad observation windows reveal a cozy amber-lit library lounge with bookshelves and tiny reader silhouettes. Use a conventional spacecraft silhouette, mechanical details, antennas, and bright blue engines.
Use cinematic 1970s space-travel illustration, dramatic scale, strong composition, and tactile print grain. Limit the palette to midnight navy, vermilion, warm ivory, and electric blue.
Leave the top quarter and bottom fifth as quiet midnight-navy space for text I will add in Canva. Keep the ship, planet, and engine trail in the middle of the composition.
Include no letters, numbers, logos, labels, watermarks, or real-world brands.
In that version, you will add the headline in Step 4. Both routes lead to the same finished poster. The text-free route also gives you direct control over the headline's font.

Step 4 of 5
Add event details you can edit
Open the approved result in Canva's editor using the available design action. If necessary, download it, create a blank design, and add it through Uploads.
For a precise working size, use Canva's Custom size controls: choose pixels, set the width to 1080 and height to 1350, then create the design. You can copy the artwork from the first editor into this blank design. Fit it proportionally and center it. If narrow margins remain, set the page background to a matching dark color. Check that the headline and reserved space remain visible.
Give the footer the feel of a space-travel ticket. Open Text → Add a text box and create four separate, center-aligned boxes. Canva's text guide covers the font and formatting controls.
Start with a small departure label:
Prompt
NEXT DEPARTURE
Make the date the strongest line in the footer:
Prompt
NOVEMBER 14, 2026
Place the time and destination together beneath it:
Prompt
19:00 EARTH TIME · ARES READING ROOM
Finish with a short call to action:
Prompt
RESERVE YOUR SEAT
Use these settings as a starting point for the 1080 × 1350 poster:
Line
Font and size
Color
Departure label
Space Mono, 18
Electric blue, #69C6FF
Date
Anton, 46
Warm ivory, #FFF9E6
Time and destination
Space Mono, 18
White, #FFFFFF
Call to action
Space Mono, 18
Electric blue, #69C6FF
Center the boxes under the artwork and keep the time-and-destination line on one line. The footer should have four distinct levels: small label, large date, compact details, then a little extra space before the call to action. Keep all four boxes comfortably inside the page.
For precise placement, Position → Advanced lets you set each box's Y position. In our portrait, the four lines start at 1075, 1115, 1200, and 1270 pixels, respectively. Use Center to align each box horizontally. A width of 900 pixels gives the longer details line room to breathe. If your artwork reserves a different amount of space, adjust these positions while preserving the hierarchy.
If a color change affects only newly typed letters, select all the text inside that box and apply the color again. Check the result with the box deselected. A matching navy page background, #0D1A2F in this example, removes pale margins around the artwork.
For the text-free image, add this headline in its own box:
Prompt
MARS BOOK CLUB
The booking line is sample copy. It does not create a booking page or link. Replace it with an approved destination or instruction before adapting the poster to a real event.
Optional: make the generated heading editable
If you kept Craft's generated headline and want to change its font, try Magic Layers on a copy of the image. Canva documents the editor route as select the image → Edit → Magic Layers. It works best with illustrations and graphic layouts, but a detailed spaceship may not separate cleanly. Follow the Magic Layers setup for supported files and limits.
After processing, select the heading and try changing one word, then undo. Confirm that the words behave as text and that the other objects remain intact. Review any changed spacing or lettering before keeping the result.
If the tool is unavailable or separates the design poorly, keep the original and use the text-free route. Magic Layers is a separate Premium AI step that draws from your shared monthly AI allowance. Availability also depends on your account and workspace controls. Craft's generated text does not by itself guarantee a selectable text box.

Step 5 of 5
Make a square version and test a date change
Keep the portrait design. Select the artwork and all four text boxes, then choose Group. Create a second blank design at 1080 × 1080 pixels using Custom size and paste the group into it. This approach does not require a paid resize feature.
Fit the group proportionally inside the square, then use Position → Center to center it. Match the page background to the artwork. Keep the whole headline, ship, and footer inside the page. Choose Ungroup in both designs so you can edit the date directly. Check the smaller supporting text at the square's actual viewing size.
Now test a realistic revision. Change the date in both designs to:
Prompt
NOVEMBER 21, 2026
Only the date should change. Keep the title, time, reading room, and booking line fixed. The point of the editable details is to handle this update without generating another image.
Check both versions:
Check
Required result
Headline
MARS BOOK CLUB appears once and reads clearly.
Event details
NOVEMBER 21, 2026; 19:00 EARTH TIME; ARES READING ROOM.
Layout
No clipped letters, stretched objects, or text touching the edges.
Revision
The date changes in both sizes; the other details stay fixed.
Files
The portrait is 1080 × 1350 and the square is 1080 × 1080.
Use the editor's download controls to export a PNG of each design. Canva recommends PNG for graphics. Open both downloads, inspect the actual dimensions, and read every line again. Keep the editable Canva designs alongside the exports.
Stop at the files for this practice run. Do not publish the fictional event or order prints. You now have a checked portrait poster, a square version, and event details you can revise directly.

Keep learning with Rundown Pro
A guide shows you one workflow. Pro opens the full course library, so you can learn the whole system behind it.
Canva describes a two-stage process: Craft plans the layout, object placement, and text before rendering the image. Its launch announcement lists up to 2K output and more than 30 aspect ratios across the model's capabilities. The Dream Lab ratio menu we tested offered six choices, including 3:4 and 1:1. Use the controls available in your account.
That makes a brief with a headline, a main illustration, and reserved space a useful starting task. Judge whether the result follows those instructions before adding effects.
Craft, Dream Lab, and Magic Layers do different jobs:
Name
Role in this workflow
Craft
The image model you select.
Dream Lab
The place where you prompt it and review results.
Magic Layers
An optional tool that turns a flat image into editable elements.
The Canva Research overview describes Magic Layers as a separate model for breaking an image into parts. Keep that distinction in mind when a product demo shows editable text after generation.
What do the leaderboard claims mean?
At launch, Canva reported fourth place among image models and second place among labs on DesignArena. Those are different rankings. Its announcement also reports first place in People & Portraits and Landscapes & Nature, and second in Abstract & Patterns.
Use those reported launch results as a reason to try Craft, not a guarantee for every prompt. A leaderboard rank does not establish error-free spelling, exact brand fonts, or how many revisions your poster will need.
To compare Craft with another model, use the same brief and aspect ratio. Keep all attempts and judge headline accuracy, layout, time spent correcting the design, and total usage. Our Nano Banana product-image guide uses a different starting point: an approved photo whose details must survive each edit.
Common problems
Problem
Try this
The headline is misspelled.
Simplify the lettering once. Then use a text-free image and add the heading in Canva.
There is no room for event details.
Reduce the artwork or regenerate with a larger blank area. Keep the text readable.
A new generation changes the whole scene.
Return to the approved result for layout work. Make date and venue changes in text boxes.
Magic Layers changes letters or separates objects badly.
Undo or return to the saved copy. Use the original art and ordinary text boxes.
The square version cuts off the headline.
Reposition or reduce the image in proportion. Do not force a crop through the text.
For a broader campaign, define the audience and message before generating more variations. Build a Marketing Creative Studio in Your Pocket covers campaign briefs, visual direction, asset production, and review. Those methods help you decide what to create next.
FAQ 5 questions
Frequently asked questions
Is Canva Craft free?
Canva announced Craft for all users, including people on its free plan. You still need to sign in to a Canva account, and generations are limited. Check your AI allowance and any usage notice in your account. Extra AI steps can draw from the same allowance.
Why can't I find Canva Craft?
Open Dream Lab from the homepage, rather than looking inside a design. Check the selected model and your workspace's AI access. Canva documents Dream Lab access restrictions for teams and classes, and its help page excludes canva.cn. Do not switch to another model and assume it is Craft.
Can I edit every part of a Craft image?
A generated image can still be one flat layer. Try Magic Layers when your account offers it, then inspect the separated elements. For details that must remain exact, add ordinary Canva text boxes from the start.
Does Craft support an API or AI assistants?
Canva announced public API access. Its launch page labels Craft support through Canva MCP as coming soon. A general Canva connection in an assistant does not establish that it can select Craft. Follow the current Craft availability details before planning an automated workflow.
Can I use the result in a real campaign?
Review the text, likenesses, logos, and other material before use. Canva's Dream Lab terms guidance does not grant rights to someone else's protected brand or character. Replace every fictional event detail, add your approved destination, and check the final placement's size requirements before publishing.
