Automate Tasks With Claude’s “Record a Skill” Feature

In this guide, you will learn how to record a task with Claude's Record a Skill and turn it into an automation. You do not need to know the best way to complete it or perform every step perfectly.

• Operators and admins who repeat the same file, folder, or browser workflow every week.
• Creators and marketing teams who move finished work between local apps, shared folders, and publishing tools.
• Anyone with a manual task who knows what the finished result should look like but not whether to use computer use, a connector, or a script.

You will build a reusable Claude skill from a task you demonstrate on your computer. Claude will study the task, suggest the best way to automate it, and turn the useful parts into instructions you can review, save, and test.

• A Pro, Max, or Team Claude plan. Record a Skill is not currently available on Free or Enterprise plans.
• The latest version of Claude for Mac with access to Cowork.
• macOS Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions for Claude.
• A task you already perform, preferably with local files or desktop apps.
• Optional access to the Claude in Chrome extension (https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12012173-get-started-with-claude-in-chrome) for workflows that use websites.

Once the skill works reliably, add it to a daily or weekly recurring task in Claude Cowork. Start with a low-risk workflow and review the first few runs before letting it operate on its own.

Workflows that depend on local files, browser control, or desktop apps may still need the connected computer available when the task runs. Connector-based or remote workflows are usually easier to schedule.
