The Rundown: In this guide, you will learn how to use ChatGPT Agent Mode for hands-off document creation. You’ll also learn the pros and cons of agent mode.
Who this is useful for:
- Contractors and small business owners who want to use agentic ai
- Knowledge workers who live in Google Docs, Notion, Slack, etc.
- Solo creators who want to offload research and drafting
- Anyone who wants “good enough” first drafts while they do more important work

STEP 1: Turn agent mode in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT. Click the “+” for more options. Select Agent Mode.
You’ll see how many agent runs you have left (e.g., “36 left”).
gent mode is great for batching work. Think of it like hiring a slightly clumsy but tireless intern who doesn’t get bored.

STEP 2: Choose what the agent can access
In the Agent settings, check which tools/connectors it can use (Google Drive, email, Slack, Notion, etc.).
For a simple test, I only enabled Google Drive so it can create a document for me.
Important note: click through to read about privacy risks with connectors.
I would not connect highly sensitive systems (medical records, banking, detailed client data). I use agent mode mainly for personal productivity and general research, not for anything that could get me audited, sued, or fired.

STEP 3: Describe the task in detail (talk-it-out)
You can type, but talking it out is often faster and more natural. For example, you might say something like:
“It’s almost tax season and I’m a contractor with a corporation in Ontario, Canada.
I want you to deeply research all the tax advantages, deductions, and legal ways to reduce my tax bill as a small business.
Then create a one-page step-by-step action plan in a Google Doc that I can follow next year to optimize my tax efficiency.”
Key things to include:
- Your situation (contractor, corporation, province/country)
- Your goal (e.g., qualify for a specific small business rate like 12.3% in Ontario)
- What you want as the output (a one-pager, in Google Docs, step-by-step)
The more context you front-load, the better the agent behaves. Vague prompts lead to vague documents.

STEP 4: Let the agent work and take over for certain tasks
The agent will often ask for more context so it can tailor the plan. You might also get stuck, and that's when you take over the agent to log in to certain sites.

STEP 5: Review your results and make iterations
What usually happens in practice is the first version of the document is often messy:
- Bad formatting
- Walls of text
- Headings and lists all over the place
You can then ask the agent to reformat by using clear headings, numbered sections, and bullet points for actions.

There you have it. Here, the AI agent created Markdown format in Google Docs with a better structure for your text.
Agent mode is fantastic for getting from 0 to 70% without lifting a finger.
You should expect to manually clean up formatting and double-check any legal/financial advice with a human professional.
Pro Tip: If I were using this day-to-day, I would queue multiple agents at once (e.g., 5–10 different research + doc tasks). Let them run while I focus on deep work. Come back later to quickly skim each doc, ask for a reformat if needed, and make final edits myself
