The Rundown: In this guide you'll learn how to build a custom Claude Skill that generates branded YouTube thumbnails by analyzing top-performing videos, based on the video topics you’ve got.

Who is this useful for:

  • YouTube creators tired of spending hours designing thumbnails
  • Content agencies creating branded visuals for multiple clients
  • Solopreneurs who need to A/B test thumbnails without design skills
  • Anyone who wants consistent, on-brand thumbnails automatically

STEP 1: Configure Claude settings and enable Skill Creator

Head to Claude and sign in with your Pro or Max account. Now let’s configure the setting to use Claude skills.

  • Click the "Profile" icon in the bottom-left corner and go to "Settings".
  • Navigate to the Capabilities section and enable "Code execution & file creation"

Enabling this allows Claude to run custom code and create files such as, PNG files for the thumbnails.

Now, scroll down to the Skills section on the same page. Toggle on the "skill-creator" and click the three dots next to it and hit the "Try in Chat" button.

You've now configured the Claude skill that will help you create custom Claude skills.

STEP 2: Generate your Thumbnail Generator Skill

Now that Claude is configured, use the Skill Creator to build your thumbnail generation tool. Start a new chat, drag in your brand logo file, and use the prompt below:

"Help me create a skill that generates high click-through rate thumbnails. It should ask for the best-performing YouTube video links on a similar topic, analyze them, and generate high CTR thumbnails using the PIL library. Each thumbnail should always contain the logo on the top-right corner. The prominent colors to be used are Black, White, and Blue."

Claude creates the new "Thumbnail Generation" Skill and generates a ZIP file along with usage documentation explaining how to use your newly created Skill.

STEP 3: Download and install your custom Skill

Once Claude has created the zip file for the “Thumbnail Generation” skill, download the ZIP file and configure this as a new custom skill by uploading it in the Skills section. Follow the below steps:

  • Navigate to Profile → Settings → Capabilities → Upload Skill
  • Drop the downloaded ZIP file. Claude installs your Thumbnail Generator Skill and makes it available for use in all your chats.

You're now ready to generate your first Youtube thumbnail using the newly created Claude skill, which automatically analyzes the topic and runs the thumbnail generation scripts.

STEP 4: Generate thumbnails for your YouTube videos

Start a new chat and ask Claude to generate a thumbnail on your chosen topic while attaching 3-5 links to best-performing similar YouTube videos.

You could try a prompt like:

"Generate a YouTube thumbnail for a video about 'AI Productivity Tools 2025'. Here are 3 top-performing videos on similar topics: [paste YouTube URLs]. Create a high-CTR thumbnail with my logo on the top-right corner using our brand colors."

Sit back and watch Claude generate your YouTube video thumbnail with your logo perfectly placed on the top-right corner. Once, you’ve got your first thumbnail you can refine as needed by prompting things like

"Use Roboto font instead" or

"Make the text bolder with Sans Serif font."

Pro tip: Use this same approach to create other productivity Skills, such as a presentation generation Skill for automated slide decks or an email marketing campaign Skill for designing newsletters.
