The Rundown: ChatGPT Agent Mode combines deep research capabilities with autonomous actions, allowing it to generate comprehensive reports and presentations autonomously.

STEP 1: Access Agent Mode

Head over to ChatGPT and click on “Tools” in the main menu. You’ll see “Agent mode” appear in the dropdown, select it to activate this powerful feature.

You'll also notice a “Sources” dropdown that allows you to connect various tools like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Canva. While these connectors make integration easier, Agent Mode can also sign into other platforms autonomously by opening new browser windows.

 

STEP 2: Define Your Research Task

Create a comprehensive prompt that outlines exactly what you want the agent to accomplish. Be specific about deliverables and sources. For example:

“Research the new [topic/technology]. Deliver a two-page report citing academic and industry sources, plus a five-slide presentation deck.”

The beauty of Agent Mode is that you can combine multiple tasks in one prompt: Research, analysis, content creation, and even presentation design, all handled autonomously.

STEP 3: Let the Agent Work Autonomously

Once you submit your request, Agent Mode will open a new browser window and begin working independently. This process typically takes 15-25 minutes depending on the complexity of your request. The agent will:

  • Search through multiple academic and industry sources
  • Navigate websites, archives, and official documentation
  • Extract and synthesize relevant information
  • Create visual elements and charts for presentations
  • Compile everything into your requested format

You can watch the agent work in real-time as it scrolls through Wikipedia, visits official websites, and gathers information from various sources.

STEP 4: Review and Extend Your Results

After the agent completes its initial task, you'll receive a comprehensive report and any additional deliverables you requested. The results often include detailed analysis with proper citations, professional presentations with custom graphics, and well-structured documentation.

To take your research further, you can ask follow-up questions like:

“Find the LinkedIn profiles of the main authors and create personalized outreach messages.”

The agent will then search for contact information, create a spreadsheet with details, and even draft personalized messages for networking.
